ABOUT ME

JUSTIN DEFFNER

ACTION PHOTOGRAPHY

I've been an athlete my entire life. I know what it's like to have the thrill of a big game, an important competition, or a strong fighter across the ring from me. Since the 1990s, I've been involved in one sport or another without any breaks. I played baseball and fenced epee and saber through high school, picked up martial arts at a competitive level in 2011 and started teaching gymnastics at the same time. Throughout my sports journey, I realized that most photos of me are either before competition, after competition, or in a forced pose. While those are nice, the times I miss were the ones spent in the moment: while I was in the ring, while I was participating in the sport. My goal is to capture those split second moments of action that define the sport and athlete. Whether that's a kick to the face, scrambles in a grappling match, or a quick submission, I'm there to capture the moment.

I graduated from SHSU with a degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Film and a minor in Psychology. After graduating, I worked for Walt Disney World at ESPN's Wide World of Sports as an Action Photographer. As an independent photographer I've shot events as small as local summer camps and as large as World Championships for international organizations. My education, training from ESPN and Disney, along with my extensive background of participating in the sports I shoot gives me a unique viewpoint that allows me to capture athletes in a way that truly shows their greatness.
